I keep hearing that this is an Online Problem and I'm sorry but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about forty years of women's art and writing and media. I'm talking about how so many people ideologically describe history and psychology and culture in major publications and TV shows, not just social media. The terminally online did not invent it.
The culture's consistent refusal to act like women have real power to affect the world and the movement of money is part of what makes me insane, here. Every time I talk about this problem, it is reframed as a personal problem, something to get new friends or try new medication about, as if that individualist frame presents an actionable solution for what I am begging everyone to understand as a cultural problem. It's not about me looking for fulfillment, I'm just accepting that the circumstances being what they are, there is nothing I can do because people like me are not listened to. I do not get to make movies or publish a book or start a nonprofit that might actually Do Anything beyond personal catharsis or enrichment, so I'm just trying to be pragmatic about the circumstances.
Naturally, the sign of a well-adjusted and good-hearted person is coming back a month later to insult a stranger for the crime of not responding how you wanted. Truly you have shown me but good.
